As part of Connecting for Life, Ireland’s National Strategy to Reduce Suicide 2015-2024, we are pleased to share the following Suicide Prevention Training Programmes from the HSE on the ITEN platform. One of the many roles of Education Centres is to deliver wellbeing supports for teachers and school leaders. In line with this mission, Education Support Centres collaborate with agencies where our goals align. We are proud to support the excellent work of the HSE and the National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP) in promoting these vital programmes, broadening their reach to empower individuals to make a meaningful impact in their communities.
These valuable programmes are fully funded by the HSE NOSP, with no charge to the participant, as part of its commitments to education and training in Connecting for Life’s strategic goals ; 1) Improving the nation’s understanding of and attitudes to suicidal behaviour, mental health and wellbeing and 2) Supporting local communities’ capacity to prevent and respond to suicidal behaviour .
Trainings are coordinated and delivered locally, by the network of HSE Regional Suicide Resource Offices nationwide. For the counties of South Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford, Carlow and Kilkenny, face to face trainings are available via the Connecting for Life South East Community Healthcare booking page ( https://bookwhen.com/sro) which connects you to the HSE Regional Suicide Resource Office South East.

Training Information

As trainings are fully funded by the HSE, they are subject to minimum attendance. For this reason we ask that you only book a place if you are certain you can attend on that day or in that county or cancel well in advance, this is so we can avoid reduced numbers on the day and keep trainings cost-effective and sustainable.

All of the trainings listed below are for those aged over 18 years only. We do not provide training directly to young people as we endorse a cascade approach with teachers, supporting them to support their students. There is no expiration date on the trainings-you can reattend trainings if you wish. As the trainings are aimed at increasing participants’ confidence and competence when it comes to supporting someone in suicidal distress, it can be encouraged to embed trainings within organisations, attending on a 1 to 2 yearly basis to keep the skills learning a priority. No training is mandatory to attend, given the sensitive nature of the material.
A tiered approach to training is recommended i.e attending safeTALK ( suicide first aid) prior to attending ASIST, (intervention skills training). Though all of the trainings can be classified as suicide prevention trainings, Let’s Talk about Suicide, safeTALK, Understanding Self-Harm are particularly pre-vention, seen as antecedents to suicide. ASIST is intervention, supporting an individual at imminent risk of suicide and working with them to support their own safety and the suicide bereavement workshop is considered a postvention support for professionals who come into contact with those bereaved by suicide.
Let’s Talk about Suicide can be used in lieu of safeTALK training, for convenience purposes, as the same key messages are in both. However, we strongly encourage in person attendance to allow participants to integrate the learning in a safe space. With this in mind, we advise to only come to training when you are emotionally ready to do so and are able to receive the education around suicide. If you have been bereaved by suicide or affected by suicidal behaviour in the recent past, it is generally recommended to wait 6 to 12 months before training to allow emotions to process. Self-care is referenced and embedded throughout each training and is actively encouraged to avail of after each training .

From reading this information, if you, a member of your family or someone you know is in distress or needs someone to talk to; help, support and advice is available.
